Vivify

printer friendly format

(pronounced viv-uh-fy)  verb

Definition

1. to give life to; animate. 2. to make more lively, active, or attention-getting; intensify; brighten; make stronger or energize; enliven.

Other Forms

Revivify   (pronounced ree-viv-uh-fy)   verb   [Definition: give new life to; give fresh vigor or impetus to; revive; reinvigorate.]

Main Example

  • The election of Donald Trump has been a shot in the arm for the women’s movement. Over two million people worldwide participated in the now famous Women’s March that took place just one day after Trump’s inauguration. So now the question is: Will this revivification of the women’s movement be enduring, or will the momentum fade away rather quickly as the furor over his presidency recedes.

Workplace Examples

  • Ever since we got new management, there is an enthusiasm the likes of which I’ve never seen before. You can observe it during meetings, you see it in the corridors, in the cafeteria, everywhere. The entire workforce has been, well, vivified!
  • I’ve just replaced all the non-flowering shrubs in the front of the house with azaleas, and can hardly wait for next year. Come February, when azaleas suddenly become ablaze with color, our front yard will be vivified!

Other Examples

  • while discussing the 3rd edition of “The Articulate Professional”, this author saying: “The linking of each featured word to headline-making events or well-known persons or things helps vivify each page of the book.” [Click here for sample pages and other information about the book.]
  • in his popular seminar “Some Simple Verbal and Nonverbal Techniques to Create a Highly Favorable First Impression,” this author telling participants: “When greeting somebody for the first time, especially if it’s at the end of a long day when you might be looking a bit worn out and tired, smile with your front teeth clearly visible because that will really animate and vivify your face.”
  • a parent saying: “My 5-year-old’s favorite DVD is the American Ballet Theater’s performance of the Nutcracker. One part she really likes is when Drosselmeyer does his magic and vivifies the life-size dolls, which then begin to dance.”; this author being appointed coach of a thinly-attended Toastmasters club to help vivify it
  • a candidate for political office revivifying his faltering bid for election by hiring a new campaign team, adopting a fresh and much more resonant message, and launching an advertising blitz; the unexpected win of a huge contract by a company whose sales had been floundering helping to revivify the spirits of its workforce; Christopher Nolan revivifying the Batman franchise
  • some of the industries that had been languishing of late expecting to be revivified if President Trump’s trillion-dollar renewal of America’s infrastructure becomes a reality
